Trends in Trade Compliance: Recent Developments in Trade Policy, National Security and Enforcement
Please join Buchanan’s International Trade and National Security Team for a presentation on recent changes in tariffs, national security, and trade enforcement. Over the past year, the Trump Administration has made the “America First Trade Policy” a central priority. The principal goals of the trade policy are to promote U.S. economic interests, defend U.S. national security, and strengthen the U.S. economy.
This presentation will cover topics and areas of law that have been in the news in the last year including:
National Security
- Export Controls – Expanded US “Affiliates Rule” and China’s export controls on rare earth minerals
- Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) – Increased scrutiny of non-notified transactions, reduction in mitigation agreements, and legislative proposals to expand CFIUS jurisdiction
- Sanctions – Russia sanctions, secondary sanctions, and targeting of illicit activity.
International Trade and Enforcement
- Reciprocal Tariffs – US-China Trade Truce, Supreme Court litigation, country-specific tariffs, and economic impact of tariffs
- Section 232 Tariff Investigations– Initiation of new investigations, revocation of alternative arrangements, and additional tariff implementations
- False Claims Act and Tariffs – $8.1 million settlement of Evolutions Flooring for mis-declaring imports of multilayered wood flooring, the Department of Justice’s “Trade Fraud Task Force”, and Qui Tam lawsuits with rewards for whistleblowers.
Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credit (1.0 general credit) is approved for California, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Credit for all other states is available upon request pending approval.
