Shale gas extraction has been key to the increase in U.S. gas protection, which has driven down commodity prices and facilitated the nation's economic recovery.

As part of a National Business Institute course exploring fracking law, Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney Energy Counsel Robert L. Burns, Jr. will present "Environmental Concerns and Remedies."

In addition to providing an overview of the extraction and a detailed analysis of the key provisions of land leases and royalty agreements, the full-day course will explore environmental law compliance issues and common legal disputes. Specific topics Burns will discuss include:

  • Statutory and regulatory authority of state and federal regulation
  • Common contamination risks
  • Landowner liability concerns
  • Corporate liability – what happens when the energy company dissolves – clean-up cost allocation
  • Preventive contract clauses
  • Post-fact remedies
