PITTSBURGH/PHILADELPHIA – June 1, 2016 – Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney announces that Joseph A. Dougherty officially takes over as the firm’s CEO, Managing Director and Chairman of the Board, effective today. Buchanan’s former CEO, John “Jack” A. Barbour transitions to the position of Executive Chairman.
Today’s announcement completes a 10-month transition period since Dougherty was unanimously elected by the firm’s voting shareholders as CEO-elect in July 2015. Prior to his elevation to CEO, Dougherty served as managing shareholder of the firm’s Philadelphia office and was chair of the firm’s Advisory Committee.
“I am privileged to lead Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney and excited for the opportunities that lie ahead,” noted Dougherty. “Our firm has a long and successful history, and I have pledged to work hard to continue our successes. I am honored to be part of team that includes some of the brightest attorneys and dedicated staff in the industry.”
“The business of law is changing and the current environment is filled with challenges. Our firm is poised to take on those challenges and embrace change as we develop and implement innovative initiatives and continue to deliver the partnership service our clients know and expect from us,” added Dougherty.
Dougherty, a graduate of the Temple University Beasley School of Law, has more than 25 years of experience litigating commercial and employment-related matters and was chair of the firm’s trade secret and restrictive covenant practice group. His legal practice has focused on post-employment-related disputes, including the enforcement and defense of employment agreements, restrictive covenants and trade secrets and the protection of competitively sensitive business information.
Dougherty will serve a three-year term after which he will be eligible for re-election to a second term. In his new role, Barbour returns to the practice of law to work with some the firm’s most tenured and key clients.
