John R. Previs is Of Counsel with Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney PC, practicing in the firm’s Corporate Finance & Technology Section. He is a member of the Franchise and Distribution Practice Group.

For more than 30 years, John has been involved primarily in representing closely held businesses. His principal activity has been in structuring and closing transactions, including the buying, selling and financing of commercial entities.

John has been responsible for the closing of more than 200 transactions for companies ranging in size from local family businesses to those involved in large, multi-tiered money center financings.

This immersion in transactional work over many years enables John to understand the needs and expectations of the parties in financing transactions. His background and knowledge help him to anticipate problems and obstacles in advance and to organize and structure transactions so they can proceed to closing in a cost effective manner. Through creativity and care, John provides ideas and solutions to meet identified needs, through a positive "how to" approach.

Additionally, John has represented franchisors in many aspects of the franchise system, including the preparation of franchise agreements and franchise disclosure documents, the negotiation of franchise agreements and the purchase, sale and termination of franchises, both domestic and international. He has also represented franchisees in the review and negotiation of franchise agreements and the financing to establish new businesses.

More recently, John has been working with clients in the shale gas wastewater and water purification markets, bringing creative solutions through technology to the water treatment and water scarcity issues in these markets.

He has been selected by his peers for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America® consistently since 2016 under the Corporate Law and Franchise Law categories.

John is a frequent speaker at local and regional trade and industry meetings. He is a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
