Carla J. Vrsansky practices in the fields of patent, trademark and copyright law. She is a registered patent attorney and has experience counseling clients from a wide range of industries on all phases of design patent, trademark and copyright law.

Carla focuses her practice on domestic and international patent and trademark counseling, clearance and prosecution, portfolio management, international expansion efforts and contested proceedings, including opposition and cancellation actions before the TTAB and in other jurisdictions worldwide. Carla prepares patent and trademark applications and prosecutes them before the USPTO. She also assists clients with licensing of intellectual property rights, both domestically and internationally. She also represents intellectual property interests in complex M&A and licensing transactions.

Carla also has experience in handling all areas of design patent protection, from counseling, procurement and enforcement worldwide to interacting with world-renowned architects and designers. Her experience further includes overseeing and supervising the product clearance and protection of an award-winning chair design.

Recognized every year since 2012 by International Asset Management’s Patent 1000, the best-in-class listing of patent prosecution, licensing and litigation practitioners, Carla has been noted by clients as “particularly adept,” and considered “to be a key part of our core product development team.” In 2017, she was chosen for inclusion in IAM Patent 1000 - The World's Leading Patent Professionals 2017. An active committee member of the International Trademark Association since 1993, Carla has co-chaired educational programs, spoken and moderated panels relating to various aspects of trademark law at the association's annual and leadership meetings. She has been selected for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America® consistently since 2018 under the Patent Law category.

Carla has participated on Buchanan’s Recruiting Committee, as well as the summer associate program, and she has interviewed students both on campus at neighboring law schools and at the firm.

Her interest in and love of design and the arts has extended to her community involvement as well; she has served on the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera’s Board since 2003

Prior to joining Buchanan in 1996, Carla was an in-house attorney with a Fortune 100 corporation, counseling the corporation’s furniture, office equipment and broadcasting clients on all aspects of intellectual property law. She also assisted the corporation in updating its corporate identity guide.
