Am Law 200 firm achieves Mansfield Certification Plus Status for Fifth Year

PITTSBURGH – October 2022 – Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney proudly announces it has achieved Mansfield Rule 5.0 Plus Certification in 2022. This is the fifth year in a row that the firm has received this recognition since participating in the Diversity Lab’s pilot program.

The Mansfield Rule Certification measures whether law firms have affirmatively considered at least 30 percent women, underrepresented racial/ethnic groups, LGBTQ+ lawyers, and lawyers with disabilities for leadership and governance roles, equity partner promotions, formal client pitch opportunities, and senior lateral positions. New for Mansfield 5.0, firms are required to track their candidate pools in a disaggregated manner, prompting them to measure the impact of the Mansfield Rule by each underrepresented group. The new criteria also requires firms to consider at least 30% underrepresented lawyers for nominations to Chambers USA to increase the external visibility of underrepresented lawyers with clients and in the marketplace more broadly.

Mansfield Certification Plus status indicates that, in addition to meeting or exceeding the baseline certification requirements, the firm has successfully reached at least 30 percent underrepresented lawyer representation in a notable number of their current leadership roles.

“Buchanan was an inaugural participant of the Mansfield Certification and being active in this program for the past five years has only bolstered the firm’s commitment to diversity and inclusion in our hiring, promotion and governance decisions,” said Lloyd Freeman, Buchanan’s Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer. “Mansfield Certification will continue to be a key marker in our diversity & inclusion strategy moving forward. We are constantly evaluating metrics and other qualitative methods to increase our diversity, and to continue to foster an authentic sense of inclusion in our firm’s culture.”

“The Mansfield certification evolves every year, based on learnings from prior iterations, to drive even greater progress,” stated Kavita Ramakrishnan, Mansfield Rule and Knowledge Sharing Senior Director. “We started small on purpose; we couldn’t go from 0 to 60 in our traditionally risk-averse profession. But firms now expect and even ask for yearly changes to push boundaries.”

Participation in Mansfield Certification 6.0 will run from July 2022 to July 2023.
