PITTSBURGH (July 2023) – Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney is pleased to announce the addition of ADP, Capital One, FedEx Ground, and UPMC as participants in the third year of the Diversity Corporate Share Program. The companies that continue to participate in the program include Aura, The Hershey Company, PNC Bank, South Jersey Industries (SJI) and Temple Health System.

“We are excited to work with ADP, Capital One, FedEx Ground, and UPMC this year, in addition to our pillar partners who have been with us since the beginning of our Diversity Corporate Share program,” said Lloyd Freeman, Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer. “Increasing diversity in the legal profession is not the task of one firm or one Chief D&I Officer. We need to be intentional in the work and collaborate within the legal profession. This program does both, and it provides our diverse summer associate class the opportunity to gain experience and connections to expand their opportunities for the future.”

The program pairs the firm’s summer associates, each with a participating corporation for a one-to-four week period, giving each the additional experience of mentorship opportunities from corporate legal counsel.

“The Diversity Corporate Share Program has become a cornerstone of our summer associate program,” said Danielle Rosetti, Chief Talent Officer. “It allows the law students to better understand client service and how a legal department works with outside counsel. It is a unique learning experience that they can carry with them when first interacting with clients as a young lawyer.”

Buchanan’s summer associate program is a ten-week experience that welcomes students who are considering a career in a large, full-service firm. In addition to the Diversity Corporate Share Program, the summer associates work closely with Buchanan attorneys and have an active role in determining their assignments if they have a strong interest in one area of law. The program also offers networking and professional development opportunities.

Corporate Partner Testimonials

Damien Atkins, Chief Legal Officer at Aura

“Cultivating diversity in both the legal and technology space has always been important to me. We look forward to welcoming the summer associates to Aura so they can have a front row seat and see for themselves how in-house legal teams add value in a fast-moving environment and how diverse teams solve problems creatively and drive innovation.”

Lauren Lacey, VP, Deputy General Counsel, Assistant Secretary & Chief Compliance Officer at Hershey

“While the summer associates benefitted from the in-house experience and insights, our legal team advanced department priorities while reaping even more benefits by rallying around the shared purpose of giving, mentoring and developing the intern cohort. The Diversity Corporate Share Program, in partnership with our Dinisa H. Folmar Internship Program, truly is exposing students to different perspectives and opportunities available to them in their career. We look forward to another summer of continued impact to the diverse legal talent pipeline.”

Taylor R. Mosley, Staff Attorney at UPMC

“At UPMC we are committed to providing culturally competent care, therefore we seek to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in every aspect of our organization for the betterment of our patients, staff, and community members. We have sincerely appreciated the opportunity to further promote those values in our corporate legal internship program through our participation in Buchanan’s Diversity Corporate Share Program.”

Van McPherson, Assistant General Counsel at SJI

“Buchanan’s Diversity Corporate Share Program is a unique initiative that is centered around exposing young talent to the different career options. This is particularly critical to SJI as the energy sector evolves. We partnered with Buchanan for the past 3 years and witnessed firsthand the benefits the program had on participating students. Additionally, the program is an excellent addition to SJI’s robust diversity initiatives. Through this initiative we were able to strengthen our workforce with new diverse talent and further our commitment to developing the next generation of leaders. Mentorship is very important to SJI and this program provides us with additional opportunities to achieve that mission. We are proud to partner with Buchanan on this program and look forward to participating in the years to come.”

John C. Ryan, EVP & General Counsel at Temple Health

“We were delighted to work with Buchanan Summer Associates as part of Buchanan’s Diversity Corporate Share Program.  Meghan (Fleming) and Sam (Baycer), the two Summer Associates who joined Temple Health this summer, worked collaboratively on an important public policy issue for us. Their research was very high quality and professional, just what we would have expected at a firm like Buchanan Ingersoll, and we hope that they were able to experience what it is like to be an in-house attorney at an academic medical center. We are grateful for their work and we look forward to participating in this program in the years to come.”
