In "The Four Personalities of Lateral Hire Window Shoppers," Scher and Dougherty noted the importance of finding "a perfect cultural, financial and strategic fit."

Scher and Dougherty outlined four distinct personalities in the lateral hire shopping market — culture cravers, structure seekers, freedom finders and sun setters. Each segment has varying needs, and legal practice is not one size fits all.

"The right fit for a first-year may not be the right fit after 10 years of practice; the right fit for a practice you can handle alone may not be the right fit for a burgeoning practice requiring multiple disciplines," Scher and Dougherty explained.
