PITTSBURGH – September 4, 2019 – Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney proudly announces it is one of 51 law firms in the nation to achieve Mansfield Rule Certification Plus status – also attained in 2018. The goal of the program, developed by the Diversity Lab, is to boost the representation of diverse lawyers in law firm leadership by broadening the pool of candidates considered for these opportunities. A total of 64 firms, along with Buchanan, achieved Mansfield Certification.

In 2019, Mansfield Rule Certification measured whether law firms affirmatively considered at least 30 percent women, racially diverse and LGBTQ+ lawyers for leadership and governance roles, equity partner promotions, formal client pitch opportunities and senior associate and shareholder positions. The Plus status certifies that Buchanan met or exceeded 70 percent of program expectations for certification, and also successfully reached at least 30 percent diverse lawyer representation in a notable number of its current leadership roles and committees.

“I am incredibly proud of the Mansfield Certification Plus status for Buchanan for the second year in a row. Each and every person at our firm is committed to fostering the culture of diversity and inclusion that we have created,” said Joseph A. Dougherty, CEO and Managing Director of Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney. “We are pleased that more firms are joining this important effort and we look forward to pushing this priority even further.”

“Our plan is to raise the bar each year,” said Lisa Kirby, Chief Intelligence & Knowledge Sharing Officer at Diversity Lab. “We follow design thinking principles, so we measure results each year and work with participating firms to iterate the pilot based on the results to ensure we are moving toward our goal of diversifying law firm leadership as inclusively and impactfully as possible.”

Buchanan has also consistently earned 100 percent on the Corporate Equality Index (CEI), administered by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation. The firm partners with various professional, educational and community groups that are dedicated to diversity and inclusion, such as the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity, University of Pittsburgh's Center for Race and Social Problems, Philadelphia Diversity Law Group, Allegheny County Bar Association, National Association for Women Lawyers, Women in Law Empowerment Forum, and Diversity Lab. Buchanan is a member in good standing of the Law Firm Affiliate Network of the Minority Corporate Counsel Association and has signed onto the Association's core diversity and inclusion principles.
