Mauricio Gomm Santos, consultant in Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney's Miami office, is one of two panelists scheduled to present "Hot Topics in Arbitration" at the International Bar Association's Arbitration Committee Program on Wednesday, October 15, 2008, from 3 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. The program is part of the International Bar Association’s 2008 Annual Conference, which takes place from October 12 to October 17 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The "Hot Topics in Arbitration" presentation will provide updates and insight on the Mercosur agreement in regard to Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. The Mercosur is a regional trade agreement among these countries that promotes free trade and the fluid movement of goods, people and currency.

Gomm Santos' discussion will deal with a hot topic involving arbitration in Brazil, specifically the January 2008 Inepar vs. Itiquira case, which he has called "swimming against the tide" and refers to the dismissal of enforcement proceedings of an arbitral award bringing back the old issue of the need of a "compromiso."
