Thomas L. VanKirk, chairman and immediate past CEO of Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney PC, and wife Bonnie were featured in an April 23, 2010, article published in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, under the paper's "Newsmakers" column. The two were featured as a result of their recent "Legends in Leadership" honor.

As explained in the article, the VanKirks were among nine community leaders and organizations who were honored by the Community College of Allegheny County Educational Foundation at the "Legends in Leadership" awards dinner on Friday, April 23, 2010, in the East Club Lounge of Heinz Field. "The VanKirks received special recognition with a lifetime achievement award for the couple's 'many professional and charitable contributions' to the community. Since 1998, the 'Legends' event has sought to honor those who help provide 'quality, accessible education' to students."

Also noted in the article, Tom and Bonnie, residents of Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania, have four sons and six grandchildren. "Bonnie has a bachelor's degree from Chatham University in Oakland. Tom has a bachelor's degree from Bucknell University in Lewisburg and a law degree from Dickinson College in Carlisle. … Before retirement, Bonnie was a regional advertising manager for Time Inc.'s magazine division. Tom is chairman and immediate past CEO of law firm Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney. He is a practicing litigator and corporate adviser and, like his wife, is involved in civic and charitable causes."

The couple was quoted as saying, "We are humbled to be given this recognition considering the great number of people in Western Pa. who are very generous with their time and make significant contributions to the community."
