Shawn focuses his practice on IP procurement, management, defense, and enforcement, which involves developing strategies for securing IP as valuable assets that increase corporate revenue and can be leveraged in corporate transactions and agreements.

Shawn’s career started with a leading Department of Defense contractor where he designed and tested digital circuits and boards, which included programming circuit chips. Following this experience, he began his career in IP as a patent examiner at the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), and later while in law school moved into private practice as a patent agent. Through these experiences, Shawn has gained expertise and competency across numerous technologies including, among others:

Shawn’s law practice has evolved to include expertise and experience in a broad range of specialty areas including:

IP Procurement and Portfolio Management

Shawn advises clients ranging from large corporations to start-ups on strategies for building a valuable patent and trademark portfolio, which involves drafting U.S. and International patent applications and trademark applications and managing the prosecution of these applications before the USPTO and foreign patent offices. He uses the expertise of foreign patent counsel and his own expert knowledge of U.S. case law and U.S. examination and procedure to counsel a client during each stage of the procurement process to build an IP portfolio composed of strong individual IP assets.

Opinion Drafting

Shawn has prepared a legal analysis of Patentability, Infringement, Validity, and Freedom-to-Operate opinions for various clients based on the client’s patented claims or potential patent claims or those a competitor.

IP Licensing

Shawn successfully negotiated favorable licensing terms with no royalty fees for a client accused of trademark infringement.

Shawn was involved in a complex patent licensing negotiation for a client accused of infringing a large patent portfolio covering wireless technology. The negotiation lasted several months and resulted in a favorable royalty rate for the client.

Patent Trial and Appeal Board

Shawn has extensive experience presenting oral arguments for clients during ex parte appeals.

Shawn is also a member of the firm’s Patent Office Litigation team and has supported complex trial proceedings for the enforcement or defense of IP rights for patent owners.

IP and Data Rights in Government Contracts

Shawn has advised numerous clients on strategies for protecting IP and data rights when contracting with the U.S. government, which has included reviewing and revising government contracts where the client has been either the Prime- or Sub-contractor.
