Robert G. Mukai focuses his practice on patent portfolio management, including counseling, evaluation, procurement, and rendering validity and infringement opinions. His experience also includes the highly specialized practice of reexamination. He serves as head of Buchanan's Alexandria office and is a past member of the firm's Board of Directors.
Bob's patent experience pertains to polymer chemistry, including biodegradable polymers, synthetic fibers, petroleum chemistry, health care technology, photographic and lithographic chemistry, solvent-based and solvent-less coating compositions, metallurgy and inorganic chemistry.
Bob was profiled in the 2013 edition of IAM’s Patent 1000 list – the best-in-class listing of patent prosecution, licensing and litigation practitioners, for his “highly specialized re-examination practice alongside his portfolio management and counseling work.” In addition, he was recognized for his work in the intellectual property practice as a 2013 and 2014 IP Star by Managing Intellectual Property.
Bob was a partner with Burns, Doane, Swecker & Mathis, one of the oldest and largest law firms in the United States focusing exclusively on intellectual property, until its lawyers and other professionals joined Buchanan in 2005.
He is a former patent examiner at the United States Patent and Trademark Office. He is also a former law clerk at the United States Patent and Trademark Office Board of Appeals. Bob was a lecturer for the Patent Resources Group on the subject of "Reexamination & Reissue — Prosecution and Litigation Practice" and has worked on or assisted in a number of reexamination proceedings.
Bob has elementary knowledge of French and Japanese.
