What is JEVS Human Services?

“One of Philadelphia’s best-kept secrets,” Howard D. Scher, Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney Litigation shareholder, wrote in an op-ed published in the Jewish Exponent. Scher served as president of JEVS from 1998 to 2002.

JEVS Human Services – formerly called Jewish Employment and Vocational Service – is not an employment agency, a vocational training school, a rehabilitation facility or a government program, Scher explained.

“It’s all of these – and more. It’s an array of constantly responsive activities centered on one goal: helping individuals realize their full potential.”

Despite the name-change, the tag line – “Making Hope Happen” – has remained the same.

“To work to help further that mission is the reason I joined JEVS nearly 40 years ago, and why I continue my involvement today,” Scher wrote. “We who are involved do it not by providing charity but rather the ability to support oneself to be as independent as possible.”
