The 'Madrid Protocol' and How It Can Impact Your Company's Trademark Portfolio

October 16, 2003

Carla Vrsansky, co-author

The Madrid Protocol is an international treaty that allows trademark owners to simultaneously register trademarks in several countries with only one application. The United States adopted the treaty and will begin accepting international applications on November 2, 2003. The Madrid Protocol can effectively replace the need for a company to file, process and renew foreign trademarks in individual countries.

The principal benefits of Madrid Protocol are convenience and cost savings.
