The Florida Legislature has again approved a two-year permit extension for local government-issued development orders, building permits, level of service certificates, and permits issued by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the water management districts pursuant to Part IV of Chapter 373. The permit extension authorization was included as part of House Bill 7023, and it follows prior permit extensions that were approved by the Legislature in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012.

The permit extensions approved this year apply to permits which would otherwise expire between January 1, 2014 and January 1, 2016. The extensions granted are somewhat more limited than prior extensions approved by the Legislature, and the total extension time period available under House Bill 7023, plus prior statutory extensions, is limited to no more than four years. It is also critical to note that in order to receive the permit extension, the permit holder must notify the authorizing agency in writing of the holder’s intent to use the extension no later than December 31, 2014.
