An article by Gina M. Ameci, Shareholder in Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney’s Labor & Employment Section was published by Human Resource Executive in November. “In Between Black and White” explains that relationships between managers and employees can be improved when managers try to look at the different colors of an issue with an employee, rather than just seeing it in black and white. Managers who take time to understand and know their workforce are often able to effectively lead a team and to learn what could be holding employees back from being successful.

As Ameci explained in her article, “Managers who attempt to understand the employees they supervise; who foster a collaborative working relationship; and who try to rehabilitate to success their troubled employees, not only have a productive team, but are the successful leaders of an organization.”

Ameci explained that it is important to develop a professional relationship with an employee (which is different than befriending an employee) and to make an effort to coach employees to success.
