Concern for personal information collected by retailers is about more than junk mail, Data Security & Privacy Shareholder David A. Gurwin told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in an article published August 22, 2011.

In the article, Gurwin weighed in on complaints about retailers' use of ZIP codes, which a California court recently decided constitutes a form of personal identification.

"People are also concerned that it violates their privacy or that it's also vulnerable to identity theft." Gurwin said. "The more information you put in the hands of somebody, the higher the likelihood that someone else could access it, and then you've got an identity theft problem."
