In a recent Pittsburgh Post-Gazette article titled, "Workzone: Unpaid College Interns can be Legal Liability," Buchanan shareholder in the Labor & Employment section, Peter J. Ennis, discussed how industries in which young people are trying to begin their careers are often running into problems with their use of unpaid interns.

"You cannot use unpaid interns to simply fill in for employees," stated Ennis.

Fox Searchlight Pictures is still battling a complaint filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York in September 2011 on the set of "Black Swan," where dozens of unpaid interns were working for free in roles for which they should have been paid.

The U.S. Department of Labor currently has six criteria in place for an internship to qualify as unpaid.
