Buchanan lawyers once again occupied leadership and speaking roles at this year’s mid-winter meetings of the OSHA and RLA committees of the American Bar Association's Labor and Employment Law Section. The OSHA and RLA committees bring together leading practitioners from the government, management and unions/employees in the field of occupational safety and health and railway/airline labor law.

James J. Sullivan is the management co-chair of the OSHA committee and hosted this year’s three-day meeting in Tucson. Jim moderated a panel presentation covering the most important decisions issued by the Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission and the federal courts during the past year. Andrew J. Rolfes served as the employer representative on a panel discussing recent developments in the 22 federal whistleblower statutes administered by OSHA, in particular, claims filed pursuant to the Federal Rail Safety Act. The firm has a significant number of matters under that statute.

At the RLA committee meeting, Robert S. Hawkins met with other senior editors of the ABA’s treatise on the Railway Labor Act, and spoke on the impact of federal funding on collective bargaining in the mass transit industry.
