Pittsburgh – November 12, 2013 – Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney announced today that Raj Basi, formerly senior counsel with global energy leader The Williams Companies, Inc. (NYSE: WMB), has joined the firm as counsel in its Energy Practice in Pittsburgh.

Basi was primarily responsible for environmental issues in the midstream, power and discontinued business units of The Williams Companies, Inc., headquartered in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Since 2010, Basi was based in Williams’ Pittsburgh office, where he oversaw the selection and management of outside counsel and was primarily responsible for legal issues relating to the company’s operations in the Marcellus and Utica Shale plays. This included starting and managing the Pennsylvania legal department for commercial and transactional work relating to the Marcellus shale play.

“This is an exciting chapter in my career,” said Basi. “I have enjoyed working with Buchanan’s energy lawyers as a client, and I look forward to offering my experience and insight to advance the goals of the firm,” he added.

Basi’s career spans 19 years of experience managing corporate legal affairs including contracts, compliance, environmental, health and safety legal issues for mining companies, investment companies and construction firms.

“Buchanan has built a successful Energy practice by mirroring its own growth to the development of the Marcellus and Utica Shale region. As the number of maturing, producing wells continues to rise, midstream and infrastructure companies continue to ramp up their operations. Our Energy practice has developed a significant knowledge base to meet midstream clients’ needs. Raj’s depth of knowledge and experience in the midstream sector will be an additional asset for those clients particularly,” said Matthew Burger, co-chair of the firm’s Energy Section.

Basi has extensive experience in handling corporate oil and gas and environmental compliance. He focuses his practice on transactional law, policy, risk analysis, regulatory compliance and corporate social responsibility reporting.

Sean Moran, chair of the firm’s Oil and Gas practice, has worked closely with Basi as the firm has represented Williams for a number of years. “Raj is very well known and well respected among the members of our firm,” he said. “His first-hand experience at Williams will provide us with invaluable insight into how best to serve midstream companies. There are very few lawyers with actionable, relevant midstream experience, so we are pleased that he chose our firm. He will certainly add to the depth of our energy practice,” he added.

Basi earned his J.D. and Environmental/Natural Resources Law Certificate from Northwestern School of Law, Lewis & Clark College, and he earned his B.A. degree in Natural Resources Management, with honors, from Alaska Pacific University. He is licensed to practice law in Alaska, Washington, Oklahoma, and Pennsylvania.
